Miracles...

Ever have one of those days when things just don't feel right. Something or someone has thrown a wrench into your spokes. I was having one of those moments - a flash of -Why does this have to happen? Why now? Just as I'm about to enter the Pity Parkway - I take a detour to my mailbox. Here's where the story gets interesting. A couple of weeks ago - I met Claudia. There was an aura about her. Something almost palpable - a spirit filled with optimism, hope and her soft spoken words hung like tangible verses to keep and ponder later.

(childhood photo above) Claudia is an actress living part-time right here in Overland Park, Kansas. She resides with her husband, a survivor of the Holocaust, part of the year at their home in Poland. Providing education through community service and speaking engagements, they share a history that is overwhelming to so many and as each year passes with so few who remain.

You can't imagine my surprise when I opened the mailbox and found a gift from her. An offering so generously filled with warmth and kindness it made my heart swell. A lump formed in my throat the moment I started to read the notes that explained the many articles that have personal meaning to her. I call this type of sharing -a miracle. Small -- maybe- no parting of a sea - no burning bush - but her thoughts and sentiments moved me to tears - blubbering actually -- and there are some little treasures she shared that I don't believe I shall ever part with.

I knew the moment she left the shop - our paths may not cross again -but we were kindred spirits in understanding the history that is attached to bits and pieces of tangibles that so many take for granted. I knew that I would never forget her. So, I'm going to share with photos the personal and collected items she bestowed on me. Her note said to use them in our shop - sell them - or give them away. So next time you are in - you may be the recipient of some little whimsy, photo, or handmade card that I will share with YOU.

Here's just one of the bits of wisdom Claudia shared with me. The Chassidim say: "Act each moment as if the whole universe were in perfect balance between good and evil: and it is your next action that is the final straw that will sway the whole of creation to one side or the other." That's why actors have stagefright. They feel this balance and their role in it. When, after years of acting, stagefright subsides, it is because we have forgotten the enormous responsibility of our next action. Tremble: your whole lfe is a rehearsal for the moment you are in now.

It's meeting people like Claudia - who remind you that each word shared may impact someone in ways you never dreamed. Thank you Claudia. You are living your life with a purpose. I'm reminded -- this is no dress rehearsal!

Gratitude. It's the word that fills my thoughts daily. Today - I'm especially grateful for the wonderful new friends and women who surround, support and keep me filled with creative inspiration. Kara Ward and Ali Gripp spent and entire day soldering these little domino charms for me. They brought them to the Miss Frenchie Show last Friday evening. I passed them out - they were little reminders of the wonderful classes we offer at Vintiques. They made 100 of them and I have 18 left. For all the recipients - who could hardly believe we GAVE them away - you share in the gift of their generosity. Kara and Ali - thank you for the kindness and the friendship. You are amazing women! Amazing artists! Amazing mothers and wives! Ahhh, the many hats we wear....

If that wasn't surprise enough .... Kara brought this charming little garland into the shop - another gift... I'm wondering if she ever sleeps!!! It's hanging on the shelf just behind the counter. A beautiful reminder of my dream come true -- a shop filled with all the things I love to create with! Sometimes you meet like minded - and you know "they get it!" They understand why you kept the little netting off an old hat. They see tattered lace and know exactly what to do with it. Girls who know and understand texture. Fiber freaks! Hunters and gatherers of the worn and chippy frames, old greeting cards, they love the flower images on antique calling cards - they simply get it. They understand my love for those odd bits that I've hung on to for the past 20+ years. I'm grateful for those of you who understand and collect those things as well. My kindred spirits!

We had a plan - got there - had to change the plan - and we managed to cram all that we brought into our little space upstairs in the loft. It was hard work - but lots of fun when you can do those shows with someone so happy about life! She's the best friend anyone could ask for. For those who were lucky enough to make it to the Miss Frenchie's show - I applaud your effors. There were about 75 people waiting in line 1/2 hour before the doors were open on Friday evening. A rare shopping experience with beautiful collections of antiques, home decor and whimsies made by the hands of some of KC's finest artisians. Au Revoir to the Miss Frenchie Show

Dramatic effect? YOU BET! Elizabeth Maxson formerly Elizabeth House (St. Louis), Debbie Dusenberry of Curious Sofa, Gwen McClure and Teri Elliot of French by Design (Mission Road Antiques), Donnie Volkart -just back from Roundtop, Texas (River Market Antiques), Barbara Farmer of Parrin and Co., (45th & State Line Road), Carol Spinski of Raised in Cotton), brought truck loads of beautiful treasures from around the world. Karla Nathan (Karla's Cottage) & Beth Leintz brought a great collection of their handmade, hand-painted works of art. So many things to choose from - so little time to shop! Wonderful offerings from one of our instructors, Robin Mackintosh. Her new necklaces were amazing. I wear one of her pmc and charm necklaces almost weekly. It's a magnet for an "OH" or "Ahhhh" response. Followed by, "Where did you get that?" Sorry ladies -it's a one of a kind creation - and a treasure - just like Robin!

Lauri Meyers - shopping the gauntlet of wares - she took home a beautiful birdcage from Carol at Raised in Cotton! Lauri has an eagle eye when it come to groovy stuff! Her artwork is as lovely as she is! Stay tuned - she's having a show of her own in June. I'll share the details later.

Artwork by Gregory Johnson. We own 1/2 dozen of his creations. So many of you have asked to purchase the one's we keep at the shop. His work truly inspires me - moves me. I carried the first piece I purchased in my car for over a week - just to show it to everyone I came in contact with -- it's still one of my most prized possessions! Did I mention he's one of my favorite people? Adorable -- absolutely - adorable!

Julie Reed's designs - delicate and intricate pins made from beautiful fibers - every detail was perfect. Julie was kind enough to make our vendor signage -- it was lovely and a ton of work to do. I for one truly appreciated her dedication to this important task. Thank you Julie!

ART CHALLENGE!

Okay, here's the 411 on the Art Challenge Chari, Michelle, Craig and I just completed. We had these "paint it yourself" oval canvas. Each of us took one and there were no rules or restrictions. The first photo is the back of Chari's piece. Thank heavens she had not covered it - I forgot to take the BEFORE picture.

First up is Craig's work. He used his handmade paper and bits of his vintage button collection. He used an old tailors measuring tape as a new edge. Chari used images from her French magazine collection. Some were sacrificed for her project. Next is Michelle's piece. A recessed childhood photo of her is contained - to remind: find and dwell within your sanctuary. The last is mine. I found the illistration in a collection of children's stories. It stuck me - You never know what you'll find on the other side of the door! Thank you Michelle and Chari - Craig and I really needed the extra week of grace and production time. We've got another in the works - details and photos to follow!

I create a tiny collage -- or find an image on a victorian postcard.... I like making things with old hankies, taking old faded flowers off of tired hats, I thoroughly enjoy rescuing old buttons, junk jewelry, broken bits that all turn into something with a new purpose. To all of you assemblage artists -- whether you are assembling a bracelet, photos for a scrapbook or creating a sculpture - here are the newest temptations!

Sisterhood...

Got a call from my sister yesterday. She lives in Dallas, Texas and it was good to hear her sweet voice. I miss her. Just started thinking about my relationships with my girlfriends. How important these women are in my life. Young friends - just getting started in the real world of - mortgage payment due, car needs repair - they are in the --6 more months until paid vacation part of life, older friends who have younger lifestyles and older friends who are starting the settle down phase - kids are grown - have finally left home for the third time - husband is retiring soon - looking down the road phase....

No matter what age and circumstance -- girlfriends with young families, grown families, families that consist of puppies, or cats or plants -- all of my girlfriends mean so much to me. Little things they do to show support, words that compliment, set me straight, and even humble - all important in the big picture of friendship. Here's to you -- SISTERS!

So we've been saying Goodbye to the buttons that have been stacked and piled, sorted, cleaned and then tagged and bagged. Some of these were in my first collection - I started about 20 years ago. I watched my grandmother cut every button from shirts before turning the shreads later into other useful things. (Recycling before we knew we should. Recycling instead of wasting.) The buttons are hung - about 3/4 of the collection. We are frantically working to build another display so that the rest can join the bunch. If you are interested, Craig has sorted and cleaned every one of them - several thousand of them! It's taken months to get them organized... well, somewhat organized. We have pounds of ivory/white shell, glass and vintage plastic buttons, pounds of black -- and little cubbies of loose multi-color to select from --if you just need one or two. The newest addition to our shelves is Sunrise Soap! Handmade by Judy, the owner and maker of fabulous smelling and moisturizing, beautiful bath bars. We have stocked several of our favorite 5B & Co., votive candles. They will burn for 16-18 hours -and will fragrance an entire room. (or more) My absolute favorite is Flower Shop. It smells just like walking into the fridge at the florist. But we have lots more fragrances for you to sniff.

A new friend and talented actress - Laura Roose made me these Faerie Wings! She can make you a pair too. I wore mine during our Open House - was hoping that Craig might be willing to be fitted for a pair - but I couldn't convince him.... I think they are a lovely reminder of childhood - when I used to wonder if I flapped my arms hard and fast enough and jumped off the roof--- could I fly? We all know the answer - but Laura's wings make me feel like I could.

Promise of Spring

Four sunny days in a row..... is it possible that we can watch the St. Patrick's Day Parade this year without being layered and bundled up? I'm ready for my Cardinal family to return to my table umbrella and start their nest building. Until then, I'll gaze upon my bird prints and pretend that the warmth felt from the sun coming through the windows in the afternoon - really make it feel like it's in the 70's! Ahhh, Spring - I'm welcoming you with open arms!

FINALLY - This Friday evening.....

We are still patching, papering, packaging, painting and have yet to push a broom to clean up the construction mess. (Pardon the alliteration.) BUT, we'll be shiny and new on Friday evening. We are excited to reveal the piles of antique paper , music, ephemera, buckets, bags and tiny packages of buttons, Craig sorted, cleaned, bagged and tagged - they number in the 1,000's. There are bins of vintage linen napkins, tablecloths and dresser scarfs, about 200 dainty, girly hankies - I grab them up because I'm so fond of them -some excellent handmade soap, 5B & Co., Candlemakers votive candles, functional and whimsical objects of beauty and desire from local artists, costume jewelry, handmade paper and bags, shelves and packages of all sorts of little whimsies for my creative kindred spirits. We've got a table that will seat 16 - and it's in the new WorkShop - classes

begin on Saturday, Feb. 7th. So do our regular business hours. Tuesday - Sunday 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Closed on Monday

Open the new barn doors to Home exChange. It's stocked 6 feet high in goods and furnishings for the home. There's wonderful old stuff that's still in great shape, so old-- it's styish, so weird-- it's cool, so unique -- it's special.... there are doors, windows, a pair of collums, and chairs...chairs....chairs!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We are about to make some dramatic changes to VINTIQUES.

For those of you who haven't been in lately - we'd like you to know that we are not taking a 6 week vacation - more like 4+ weeks of construction and painting again.

When we re-open in February - (Friday, Feb. 6th 6-9 p.m. for a special Sweetheart Open House) we will be stocked with tons of ephemera, odd bits, pieces, components for all of the collage and assemblage artists who shop us regularly. We will also be offering classes on "How do I do that?" Everything from a memory bracelet, assemblage jewelry - to re-constructing a chair and fine furniture care techniques. The back of the store will be filled with great home furnishing finds - none that will exceed $150. Great "project" furniture and items to repurpose. (You've asked for it - we'll supply it.)

We've got lots of surprises in store for you this year. It all begins with the party on February 6th. Mark your calendars and join us for an evening of merriment, bubbly and chocolate! We had a great time at the Holiday Open House. Thank you to all our guests and a special thanks to all of you who entered the raffle. We had approximately 200 guests during the evening.

Please remember that our Harvesters bin is still awaiting your donations -- and the raffle drawing for a night at the Hotel Raphael (Country Club Plaza) is still open. You may donate a child's gently worn coat, $5. in non-perishable food or pay $5. for a ticket. Drawing will be on December 15th and the winner will be notified on December 16th. Shopping at the Plaza - then head to the Hotel for a beautiful night's stay - a special get away - right here in town! Proceeds from the raffle will benefit Harvesters!

Chari Peak's Mixed Media Jewelry Class

Chari Peak is taking reservations for three February sessions.

She will offer classes on how to create a mixed media necklace. She will provide the wire and one of her unique little sculpted faces - call her for more information.

After building the walls 5 months ago, we've taken them down and added approx. 1,400 square feet! 58 linear feet of wall space makes up the Gallery. For those of you who've not been down to City Market to see the changes for yourself, we thought you might like to see a little snapshot!

The sculpture on the wall is titled "Gekko" and was created by John Kelley. We have several artists featured this month. Judy Briggs brings her collage and dimensional mixed media and Judy Boyer-Finnegan's work is acrylic & oil on canvas. Chari Peak is showing her acrylic paintings on furniture and canvas and her fiber and found object sculptures. Lisa Freeman offers her soft sculpture wall hangings with sentiments that will make you smile. Jewelry artists included in this month's rotation are, Diane Thaemert, Christy Moore and Ayhn Moxley. Works of Andrew Johnson, the Stitch Maestro, Stuart Morrow and Joseph Blake are on permanent exhibit. We are thrilled that our friend Andrew Johnson will also be showing his latest works of art at the Plaza Art Fair. Please stop by and say hello!
